Uria is one of the most evocative stories of the Gargano promontory: local tradition holds that a post‑Roman town was submerged where the Lago di Varano now lies. Popular narrative intertwines with archaeological evidence that attests to Roman and late‑antique occupation of the area.
The traditional account describes Uria as a large, prosperous settlement located between the modern hamlets of Piano and Avicenna, between Carpino and Cagnano Varano. The myth speaks of a rapid destruction attributed in folk memory to a catastrophic event; scientific interpretations favor natural causes such as strong earthquakes possibly followed by a tsunami.
Archaeological finds: excavations in 1953 at contrada Avicenna (Carpino) uncovered the remains of a Roman villa and a late‑antique tomb with coins, pottery and brooches now held in provincial collections. These discoveries indicate the area was used as a leisure and residential site in Roman and late‑antique times.
Uria represents a meeting point between material traces and popular memory: it appeals to visitors interested in archaeological evidence as well as those curious about coastal landscape changes and Gargano cultural traditions.
Practical note: the 1953 discoveries are documented from excavations at contrada Avicenna; for conservation reasons the artefacts are kept in museum collections and can be consulted on request. Useful coordinates: 41.885281, 15.8018576.
