Protection renewed for the Vergo Zoccorino Monumental Cherry Tree (Besana)

The protection agreement for the Monumental Cherry Tree (Prunus avium) in Vergo Zoccorino has been renewed for 2026. The tree, listed among Italy’s monumental trees and famed for its spring blossom, will be managed through continued collaboration between local authorities, technical partners and funders to ensure conservation and responsible public access.

Key points of the agreement

  • Coordination and monitoring: the Parco Valle del Lambro acts as coordinator and organizes surveillance during peak visiting periods, including the use of Volunteer Ecological Rangers.
  • Technical and phytosanitary measures: appointed specialists will carry out interventions to improve the tree’s stability and health, based on professional assessments.
  • Area management and authorizations: the landowner authorizes conservation works and cooperates in managing visitor access.
  • Financial support: a sponsor covers expenses related to safety works and necessary treatments.
  • Temporary measures during bloom: mobile barriers and access controls will be used in the flowering season to regulate visitor flow; these will be removed after the season ends.

Practical advice for visitors

The blossom period draws many visitors. To help protect this natural monument, please follow simple guidelines.

  • Respect temporary barriers and designated areas.
  • Avoid walking on surrounding agricultural land and do not cross fences.
  • Follow instructions from park staff and Volunteer Ecological Rangers on site.
  • Check for updates on opening times, access rules or temporary closures with the Municipality of Besana or the Parco Valle del Lambro before planning your visit.

The agreement is annual and may be renewed depending on outcomes and conservation needs. The shared aim is to balance public enjoyment with long-term protection of the tree and its surrounding landscape.
