Three must-do trails in the Marche in spring

Spring is an excellent season for walking in the Marche: mild temperatures, blooming nature and longer days make outdoor routes more enjoyable. Below are three trails with different landscapes and difficulty levels, plus practical tips to plan your outing.

Lame Rosse (Lago di Fiastra)

The Lame Rosse are clay formations resembling a small canyon nestled in greenery. The trail starts from the dam of Lago di Fiastra and alternates dirt tracks and woodland stretches before reaching the reddish cliffs and viewpoints.

  • Distance: about 6.5 km round trip
  • Elevation gain: 240–300 m
  • Duration: 2.5–3 hours
  • Recommended period: late April, May, June
  • Start point: Lago di Fiastra dam (parking area and refreshment point)

Monte Conero trails

Monte Conero features paths through Mediterranean scrub and cliffs overlooking the Adriatic Sea. There are long loops and shorter variants suitable for less experienced walkers or families.

  • Options: full loop 17–18 km; shorter variants 4–8 km
  • Difficulty: moderate to challenging, depending on the chosen route
  • Best period: May and June (start early to avoid the heat)
  • Access: parking in Sirolo, Numana or Portonovo; bus links from Ancona
  • Views: Belvedere Sud, the little Church of San Pietro and the view of Spiaggia delle Due Sorelle

Gola del Furlo

Carved by the Candigliano river, the Gola del Furlo is a nature reserve ideal for easy walks, wildlife watching and short historical stretches connected to the Via Flaminia.

  • Type: loop or out-and-back along historic paths
  • Suggested distance: 2.5–3 km per leg (half-day)
  • Difficulty: easy, family-friendly
  • Wildlife and vegetation: meadows, Mediterranean scrub and possible birds of prey sightings
  • Access: areas near Urbino and neighboring villages; marked trails

Practical tips for all hikes

To enjoy the day safely and with respect for the environment, keep these points in mind:

  • Clothing: hiking shoes, windproof jacket and light layers
  • Gear: enough water, energy snacks, map/GPS and a small first-aid kit
  • Safety: check weather forecasts and tell someone your route
  • Behavior: no open fires, no littering and follow trail signage; respect wildlife
  • Photography: best light is early morning or late afternoon

These three walks reveal different faces of the Marche: rocky formations, seaside views and Apennine gorges. They are ideal for a spring day in nature and can be planned even with limited time.
