What the Marmot Parliament is and where to find it

The Marmot Parliament is a striking semicircular arrangement of rocky terraces formed by erosion and frost, located around 2,000 metres in the Fanes-Senes-Braies Natural Park. The site, made of layered dolomite and karst fissures, resembles an amphitheatre and is a popular spot for observing marmots.

Why visit

Besides its geological interest, the area offers high chances to spot marmots in their natural habitat. These rodents come out of meadows and rock cavities mainly during warmer hours, producing sharp whistles that echo on the limestone surfaces — an evocative experience for nature observers.

Geology and local tradition

The amphitheatre shape originates from karst processes and dolomitic layering: ancient marine sediments transformed into rock, later sculpted by erosion, frost and tectonic uplift. Ladin oral traditions link the place to the legends of the Fanes realm, adding cultural and mythic depth to the landscape.

Practical tips for the hike

  • Difficulty and access: trails include steep slopes; basic hiking experience and sure-footedness are recommended.
  • Altitude: around 2,000 m — dress in layers to cope with temperature changes.
  • Best time: marmots are most active during warmer daylight hours; arrive quietly and observe without disturbing.
  • Gear: trekking boots, windproof jacket, water, binoculars and a camera with zoom.
  • Respect: keep distance from wildlife, never feed animals, avoid disturbing burrows and stay on marked paths.

Safety and conservation

The site lies within a protected area: follow park regulations, pack out all waste and minimise disturbance. Avoid outings in poor weather (fog, heavy rain, cold snaps) and plan return times carefully as mountain light changes fast.

Planning your visit

Contact the Fanes-Senes-Braies visitor centres for up-to-date trail information and conditions. Plan the route considering elevation gain and daylight hours — safety and respect for the environment should be your priorities.
