Tragicomica at MAXXI: Irony and Contrast in Contemporary Italian Art

Dates: April 3 – September 20, 2026
Venue: MAXXI, Rome

This large-scale exhibition investigates the tragicomic strain in Italian art from the mid-20th century to the present. Framed as a conversation between humour, paradox and critical reflection, the show combines historical works and contemporary projects to outline a multifaceted portrait of Italy.

Highlights

More than 300 works by over 130 artists are on display. Notable entries include:

  • Lucio Fontana – works that challenge perspective and the performative dimension of art.
  • Piero Manzoni – emblematic pieces of conceptual provocation and irony.
  • Gianni Colombo – installations that alter spatial perception and visitor movement.
  • Maurizio Cattelan – provocative and emblematic sculptures.
  • Roberto Cuoghi – monumental wedding cakes shown in Italy for the first time.
  • Other artists include Giuseppe Penone, Francesco Vezzoli, Alighiero Boetti, Piero Gilardi, Mario Ceroli, Monica Bonvicini, Paola Pivi, Chiara Fumai, and more.

Themes and layout

The exhibition weaves together works that address the sacred, desire, death and everyday life, demonstrating how comedy and tragedy can serve as critical tools to read social habits and cultural legacies. The display balances iconic pieces with lesser-known works, encouraging fresh viewpoints and reflection.
