History and description
Built in the second half of the 14th century by the wealthy merchant family of Guinigi, from whom it takes its name, the tower rises about 45 meters high and is made of stone and red brick. Intended as a symbol of the family’s power and dominance, it can be climbed to the top via more than 200 steps. Today, it stands as one of only two surviving medieval towers in Lucca, both restored and now owned by the municipality.
Curiosities
The tower is also famous for its rooftop hanging garden, where seven holm oaks have been planted since its construction, symbolizing the rebirth of the family’s power. According to legend, the tallest of these trees was planted by Paolo Guinigi, whose premature death was foretold by the falling of its leaves.
Access
The tower can be visited by booking time slots, at the cost of about €5, with free and reduced entry available. Combined tickets with the Torre delle Ore—the only other intact medieval tower in Lucca—are also offered.
How to reach it
Located in Lucca’s historic center, the tower can be reached by car (parking along the city walls) and then on foot, or by train from the central station.
A true symbol of power and a testimony to the medieval period, the Guinigi Tower offers visitors the chance to step back into history while enjoying a breathtaking panoramic view.
