History and description
About 87 meters tall, the Ghirlandina Tower was begun in 1099 as part of the Modena Cathedral. It was later extended with the addition of an octagonal spire, which gave it typically Gothic features blended with the Romanesque style of the Cathedral. Composed of six levels, the tower’s interior is notable for the Sala della Secchia, which contains a copy of La Secchia rapita, symbolizing the ancient rivalry with the city of Bologna, as well as the bells that are still used today for both religious and civic functions.
Curiosities
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Cathedral, the tower—whose name derives from the garlands decorating its spire—is mostly used by tourists as a vantage point to admire wonderful views and panoramas.
Access
Open from Tuesday to Sunday, with reservation recommended, the tower can be visited at a cost of €3–4, with specific reductions and free entry on certain occasions.
How to reach it
Located in the very historic center of Modena, the tower can be reached from Bologna by car via the A1 motorway, by train from Bologna Centrale, or by city bus. Once in Modena, it is easily accessible on foot through the pedestrian and cycling routes that cross the town.
A civic and religious symbol of Modena, the Ghirlandina Tower offers visitors panoramic views to discover while walking inside a structure rich in history and beauty!
