History and description
Built between the late 15th and early 16th centuries by the Guevara family, from whom it takes its name, the tower has a square plan and three floors made of rough stone. It was constructed in compliance with the Aragonese edict of 1433 as part of the defensive network of the Aragonese Castle. Recently restored, today it hosts exhibitions and events, and inside several restored frescoes can be admired.
Curiosities
The tower is tied to a particular legend according to which Michelangelo Buonarroti, during his stay, attempted to court Vittoria Colonna, a poetess who lived in the castle. Moreover, it is probably the place described by Boccaccio in the Decameron, near which young Sicilians are said to have refreshed themselves.
Access
Visible free of charge only from the outside, the tower is open to the public exclusively during events and exhibitions, which require specific entry fees.
How to reach it
Located in the Ischia Ponte area, the tower can be reached by car from Ischia Porto, by bus with lines C12 and C13 from the port, and from the sea or the coast, from which it is freely visible.
Wrapped in romantic myth as well as history and Renaissance architecture, the tower—together with the castle—offers visitors a unique and unforgettable experience!
