History and description
The only surviving element of the medieval fortification overlooking the village of Castellaro, whose earliest traces date back to 1153, the tower was once part of the feudal castle that passed through the hands of various families—from the Marquises of Clavesana to Saracen pirates—until the annexation of the village to the Kingdom of Sardinia. Originally built with a semicircular plan, the monument has undergone several restoration processes, preserving some of its original features while today blending harmoniously into the urban fabric of the village.
Curiosities
In addition to hosting events and installations, the tower also contains medieval prisons, which, however, are not open to visitors.
Access
Usually closed to the public, the tower is opened only during events or guided tours organized by the municipality, as are the prisons.
How to reach it
Located in a central square, the monument can be reached by car via the Taggia–Arma di Taggia motorway exit and following the signs to the village, by train to Taggia station followed by a bus ride, or on foot along the pedestrian path.
Demonstrating the village’s direct connection with noble families throughout history, the Tower of Castellaro is a fundamental stop for visitors wishing to fully reconstruct medieval life in all its facets.
