History and description
Built at the end of the 13th century by the Counts Della Terza, the tower originally served as a civic and observation tower, strategically located at the center of Orvieto’s historic quarters. Constructed with local tuff stone and standing about 50 meters high, the tower is adjacent to the Palazzo dei Sette, which also provides access to it. Among its features are two bells and a mechanical clock. Its name, Torre del Moro, which followed its earlier designation as Torre del Papa during the possession of Pope Leo X, is thought to derive either from a dedication to Raffaele di Sante or from the depiction of a Moor once displayed during jousting tournaments.
Curiosities
Known as the true clock of the city of Orvieto, the tower conceals at its base a plaque engraved with verses from Dante’s Purgatorio, in which the poet refers to conflicts among local families.
Access
Open daily from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm, the tower can be visited at the cost of €3.80, with free entry and specific reductions available.
How to reach it
Located near Piazza Duomo, the tower is best reached on foot, allowing visitors to enjoy the charm of the surrounding historic center.
Considered not only the city’s clock but also a true balcony over Orvieto, the Torre del Moro offers one of the most unmissable panoramic experiences in the city.
