Aragonese Tower of Torre Melissa – an important watchtower structure

Autore: Redazione 08/10/2025 08:54

History and description

The Aragonese Tower of Torre Melissa, often called “Torre Merlata” or “Torrazzo”, is a coastal tower built in the 16th century during the rule of the Aragonese in Southern Italy. It was constructed as part of a defensive system along the Ionian coast, with the purpose of protecting the population from Ottoman and Venetian pirate incursions.

The tower stands on a rocky hill just outside the town of Torre Melissa, in the province of Crotone. Architecturally, it features an octagonal plan—a relatively rare structure for this type of fortification—and is developed over three levels. These include an inner courtyard with rooms originally used as storerooms, then noble quarters, and finally the upper terrace, from which wide stretches of sea and coastline could be monitored.

Over the years, ownership of the tower passed through various noble families, such as the Campitelli and the Berlingeri, until it became municipal property. The local administration set up inside a small Museum of Rural Life, where tools, instruments, and testimonies of local traditions are displayed, alongside typical products of Calabrian gastronomy.

Curiosities

A 1561 document mentions that the tower was considered “most necessary” for spotting galleys and light vessels at sea and for alerting farms and inland sentinels. In addition to its defensive role, the tower was also used as a storage site for grain, wine, and other agricultural products, taking advantage of the lower rooms as warehouses.

Access

Open to the public as a cultural space, but it is necessary to check the website of the Municipality of Crotone for updated prices and opening hours, which may vary.

How to reach it

Located on the Ionian coast, Torre Melissa is easily reachable by car along the SS106 road. Once in the coastal village, the tower is visible from the shoreline and can be accessed with a short walk.

The Aragonese Tower of Torre Melissa is therefore not only a historical defensive structure but also a living place that preserves rural, artisanal, and social memory, becoming a cultural and tourist landmark for the area.
