A marble portrait head of a Roman woman, dated to the Antonine era (2nd century), has been officially recognised as Italian property following investigations into its export. The piece is part of the collection held by the Museum of Classical Antiquities at Victoria University of Wellington and was unveiled to the public during a presentation ceremony.
Italian authorities determined that the object originated from an illicit excavation and had entered an international trafficking network of archaeological materials. In response, the Italian Ministry of Culture and Victoria University reached a cultural cooperation agreement to address ownership and research access.
The presentation was attended by university academics, classical studies researchers and official representatives from both countries, highlighting the cultural and heritage-protection significance of the arrangement.
Such agreements show how ownership restitution can be combined with practical solutions that preserve access for scholarship and public engagement through structured loan and cooperation frameworks.
