History and description
Dating back to the first quarter of the 6th century BC, the Doric Temple of Poseidon is considered the oldest temple of Magna Graecia and the only sacred building still visible in the village. Characterized by three surviving columns—two of them Doric, whose dimensions suggest the temple was hexastyle—it was incorporated into a series of ecclesiastical buildings between the 18th and 20th centuries, before being restored to autonomy through archaeological excavations.
Curiosities
Although traditionally attributed to Poseidon, recent studies suggest it may have been dedicated to a female deity, particularly Persephone, as evidenced by the discovery of small votive statuettes.
Access
The area is freely accessible to all, with no entrance fee or fixed visiting hours.
How to reach it
Located in the heart of the Old Town, the Temple of Poseidon can be reached by car, using nearby parking areas, by bus with urban lines to Piazza Castello, or on foot through the historic center.
As one of the earliest monumental architectures of the Western world, the Doric Temple of Poseidon offers visitors the chance to experience the evolution of ancient religious practices within an urban context, while immersing themselves in the history of Magna Graecia.
