History and description
Built in stone at the beginning of the 6th century BC, the Temple of Apollo is an edifice with many faces, having been transformed over the centuries into a Paleochristian church, an Islamic mosque, and a Norman church before reaching its current form. According to scholars, it originally had a rectangular plan characterized by a perimeter colonnade in local stone, a cella with an enclosed chamber, and an inscription carved on the base attesting its dedication to Apollo. Archaeological excavations have also uncovered votive objects that shed light on the religious and social life of ancient Syracuse.
Curiosity
Considered the oldest Doric temple in Sicily and one of the earliest examples of stone architecture, the structure still raises questions regarding the adyton—the enclosed chamber at the rear, configured as a sacred area accessible only to priests. Its exact function remains the subject of scholarly debate.
Access
The site is freely accessible; however, due to strong sun exposure, it is advisable to visit during the early hours of the day.
How to get there
Located in Piazza Pancali, in the very heart of Ortigia’s historic center, it is within walking distance of all the area’s main tourist attractions.
A symbolic monument of the city’s antiquity, the Temple of Apollo is an unmissable stop for those wishing to dive into history and culture.
