Temple of Antas – an extraordinary example of ancient architecture

Autore: Redazione 08/10/2025 10:00

History and description

The Temple of Antas is located in Fluminimaggiore, in south‑western Sardinia, nestled in a valley in the Iglesiente area, and represents one of the island’s most important archaeological sites. The origins of the site date back to the Nuragic era: already during the Bronze and Iron Ages, the Valley of Antas was a sacred place for burials as well as for the cult of ancestors.

During the Punic period, a temple was built in at least two phases, one around 500 BC and another around 300 BC. The current Roman temple was erected on top of this earlier structure, built in the early Roman age and later restored significantly in the 3rd century AD under the reign of Caracalla, as attested by an inscription on the pediment.

Architecturally, the temple follows the classical style, built in local limestone with Hellenistic influences. It features a podium with an access staircase, a pronaos, the cella, and an adyton or rear chamber with two small basins for ritual ablutions. Today, visitors can still see the base, the podium, parts of the cella, the floor decorations, as well as remains of the underlying Punic temple.

Curiosities

The site was already mentioned by Ptolemy, who referred to the Valley of Antas as a sacred place on the island.

Access

The Temple of Antas can be visited with opening hours that vary depending on the season, at the cost of €4, with free and reduced entry available in specific cases.

How to reach it

Located in the locality of Antas, it can be reached by car via the SS126 road towards Fluminimaggiore, with parking available near the site.

The Temple of Antas is therefore a place that condenses millennia of history—from Nuragic to Punic to Roman—standing as a witness to the religious and cultural stratification of Sardinia.
