Pergolesi Theatre and the UNESCO nomination: overview

The Pergolesi Spontini Foundation in Jesi published its 2025 final balance, confirming economic stability and an expanding artistic programme. The theatre is focusing on youth development, accessibility, sustainability and strategic collaborations at regional and national level.

Key highlights from 2025

  • Financial performance: turnover around €3.4 million with a surplus aimed at strengthening the Foundation's assets.
  • Audience and training: the opera season attracted over 8,400 spectators, about 2,800 under-35s (33%), and subscriptions increased by 7%.
  • Festival: the Pergolesi Spontini Festival “Viaggi e Miraggi” (July–September) staged roughly 30 events across 15 venues, totaling more than 4,300 attendees.
  • Accessibility and inclusion: dedicated services for blind and deaf audiences and over 40 public outreach and training sessions.
  • Sustainability: adoption of a manifesto for sustainable theatre practices and energy efficiency upgrades funded by the PNRR, aligned with CAM criteria for cultural events.

UNESCO candidacy and cultural significance

The Pergolesi Theatre is part of the Italian nomination for a serial listing of 18 historic condominium theatres in central Italy (14 in the Marche, 2 in Emilia-Romagna and 2 in Umbria). The bid highlights both architectural merit and the theatres' communal and social roles within their urban contexts. The UNESCO evaluation mission took place in 2025; the final decision is expected at the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee in July 2026.
