History and description
Originally built by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC, the theatre was later renovated by the Romans in the 2nd century AD, who adapted it for bloody spectacles such as gladiatorial games. Its original structure, carved into the rock, had a capacity of about 5,400 spectators—today doubled—and featured a cavea divided into nine different sections, a stage with marble columns, and a double-arched gallery, all framed by a breathtaking panorama of the surrounding landscape. Today, in addition to being a cinematic location, the Greek Theatre of Taormina hosts numerous international festivals every year, attracting artists from all over the world.
Curiosity
It is said that the theatre was frequented by mythical figures and poets who, thanks to its perfect acoustics—capable of carrying even the faintest sounds—and its natural backdrop overlooking Mount Etna, a symbol of power and sacredness for the inhabitants, were able to create many literary works here.
Access
The monument is open daily with continuous hours and can be visited with an entrance fee of €12, with specific reductions and free admissions available.
How to get there
Located in the historic center of Taormina, the theatre is easily reachable on foot from anywhere in the city.
Visiting the Greek Theatre of Taormina means walking through the places of antiquity and living an unforgettable experience of history, culture, and breathtaking views.
