History and description
In the heart of Alghero’s historic center, just a few steps from the ancient walls and cobbled alleys, stands an elegant 19th‑century building that has accompanied the city’s cultural life for over 160 years: the Teatro Civico, inaugurated in 1862. It was born from the desire to provide the citizens of Alghero with a permanent place dedicated to music, theater, and social gatherings. Its construction was a long and complex undertaking, begun in 1858 and carried out according to the design of architect Franco Poggi, who reworked earlier plans to adapt them to the available space and financial resources of the time.
The theater was built on the site of the former grain market, and even some inmates from the nearby prison were employed in the works as laborers and carpenters. Externally, it presents a sober Neoclassical façade, rhythmically marked by columns and harmonious windows, while inside it features an intimate horseshoe‑shaped hall, entirely built of wood. It is precisely this wooden structure, perfectly preserved, that makes it unique in Sardinia and one of the few of its kind in Italy. With three tiers of boxes and a small gallery, the theater still retains the charm of mid‑19th‑century Italian theaters.
Curiosities
One of the architectural gems of the theater is the Royal Box, located at the center of the second tier and directly connected to the foyer, overlooking Piazza del Teatro. Throughout its history, the Teatro Civico has experienced moments of glory as well as long periods of abandonment. After World War II, it remained closed for decades until its reopening in 1994, followed by a careful restoration in the early 2000s.
Access
Today, the Teatro Civico hosts drama festivals, concerts, children’s shows, and cultural events. Ticket prices vary depending on the scheduled performances.
How to reach it
The theater is located in Piazza del Teatro, in the very heart of Alghero’s historic center, and is easily reachable on foot from anywhere in the center, particularly from the port and the seafront promenade.
Overlooking the most elegant square of the historic center, the Teatro Civico of Alghero preserves its 19th‑century soul intact: a small yet great theater where history still meets the stage.
