On the Threshold: multimedia and performative installation in Matera

When: 15–17 May 2026
Where: Fondazione Le Monacelle, Via Riscatto 9, Matera (MT), Italy

"On the Threshold" is a sensory route that merges visual arts, sound research and live performance. Developed as an interdisciplinary lab by the Conservatory of Music "E.R. Duni" within the PNRR D.I.A.R.Y. programme, the project places papier-mâché at its core: five abstract sculptures recall the texture of local calcarenite and create a symbolic landscape focused on an ascent toward Beauty.

Program and contributors

  • Opening: Friday 15 May, 18:00, Sala degli Scacchi — electronic performance with double bass curated by Grace Troilo.
  • Second installation: "Paesaggio relitto" in the Library Hall, featuring the Conservatory E.R. Duni Jazz Ensemble.
  • Visual contributions: video by Davide Masciandaro; sculptures by Suzana Henriqueta Alves da Silva in collaboration with papier-mâché master Raffaele Pentasuglia.
  • Sound research and compositions: Paolo Clemente, Giulia Inchingolo, Hasnia Ghanmi, Dario Mattia, Thomas Mondelli, Vincenzo Procino, Mario Spada, Giuseppe Nicoletti, Francesca Camardo, Gianvito Columella, Giuseppe D'Imperio (for "Paesaggio relitto").
  • Educational involvement: Conservatory students and PhD candidates contributed to music composition and dramaturgical sound design.

Why visit

The installation proposes a contemporary reinterpretation of Mediterranean traditions through humble materials and multimedia technologies. The dialogue between sculpture, video projection and electronic composition produces an immersive environment designed to prompt reflection on collective memory and the relationship between matter and the sacred.
