Stromboli: temporary land occupation for archaeological excavation campaign

The Municipality of Lipari has issued a notice regarding the temporary occupation of land parcels on Stromboli in preparation for the summer archaeological excavation campaign. The project, authorized by the Soprintendenza di Messina, targets layers dating to prehistoric, classical and medieval phases identified in the area.

• Excavation period: from 20 June 2026 to 10 July 2026.
• Handover of possession: scheduled for 20 June 2026, documented with a report in the presence of owners or, if absent, two witnesses.
• Scientific director: David Yoon.
• Excavation permit: renewed by the Soprintendenza di Messina (signed 1 April 2025), valid for three years.
• Archaeological protection: the area has been protected since 2016 following the discovery of an archaeological settlement with multiple chronological phases.

Many landowners could not be contacted, so the notice was published according to the applicable legal procedure (art. 49 D.P.R. 327/2001). Compensation for land occupation will be assessed after work completion and paid following the return of the areas, 30 days after the publication of the notice.

• Access restrictions may apply in the excavation zones during the campaign: avoid cordoned areas for safety and preservation reasons.
• Entitled parties (owners/tenants) are advised to attend or be represented at possession handover; if absent, procedures will proceed regardless.
