Study Day on the Risorgimento in Marsala

On 11 May 2026 the San Pietro Monumental Complex in Marsala will host a study day focused on the Risorgimento. Organized by the International Center for Garibaldian Risorgimento Studies, the event explores how museums contribute to preserving and communicating the Risorgimento’s historical memory.

Program and speakers

• 11:00 – Session for schools: “The Risorgimento Today: narratives in museums”, curated by Giuseppe Todaro, with interventions by Cosimo Ceccuti and Cristina Vernizzi (former director of the National Museum of the Risorgimento, Turin).
• 16:30 – Conference: “The Risorgimento Today: its historical representations and museums”, opening with institutional greetings and a series of talks on the role of museums in historical dissemination. Cristina Vernizzi will chair the proceedings.
• Lecture by Cosimo Ceccuti: “The soul of a collection”.
• Remote links with the Fondazione Brescia Musei.
• Presentation by Roberta D’Adda and Giulia Paletti on the “Leonessa d’Italia” Museum in Brescia: new prospects between emotional engagement and digital collections.
• Talk by Otello Sangiorgi: “The Risorgimento in Bologna: a history in motion”.
• Local family testimonies: Anna Giustolisi and Piero Gallo with “Two families for Marsala: from private to public”.

Aims and invitation

The event aims to create dialogue among scholars, museum professionals and the public on exhibition practices and strategies to enhance Risorgimento collections. Emphasis will be given to how museums can engage schools and local communities and to the potential of digital tools for interpretation.

The conference is open to the public and offers an opportunity to rediscover Marsala’s historical ties to the Risorgimento and to Garibaldi.
