Stromboli: land-occupation notice for archaeological campaign

The Municipality of Lipari has posted a notice of temporary land occupation for parcels on Stromboli that will be used during the upcoming archaeological excavation conducted by the American Numismatic Society. The act is registered under protocol no. 0016595 dated 5 May 2026.

  • Excavation period: from 20 June 2026 to 10 July 2026.
  • Takeover of sites: scheduled for 20 June 2026, formalized by a report in the presence of owners or two witnesses.
  • Archaeological protection: the area has been under restriction since 2016 after the discovery of a prehistoric settlement with later classical and medieval phases.
  • Excavation permit: renewed by the Soprintendenza di Messina on 1 April 2025 and valid for three years.
  • Scientific director: David Yoon.

Many landowners could not be reached; therefore the notice has been published in accordance with Article 49 of D.P.R. 327/2001. Compensation for occupation will be calculated at the end of the works and paid after the return of the areas, following a 30-day period from publication of the act.

Practical information for residents and visitors:

  • Access restrictions may apply in the areas affected by the excavations during the indicated period.
  • Rightsholders are invited to attend or be represented on the day of operations; if absent, procedures will continue regardless.
  • For further details and updates consult the official notice board (albo pretorio) of the Municipality of Lipari or the competent municipal offices.

The excavation campaign represents a key opportunity to deepen knowledge of Stromboli's ancient history and to enhance the archaeological value of the site.
