The island of Stromboli in the Aeolian archipelago will be the focus of a new archaeological excavation targeting an important prehistoric settlement. The project is conducted by the American Numismatic Society under the scientific direction of David Yoon.
Previous investigations have identified ancient habitations, including circular huts and stone-built walls, with later occupation phases dating to the classical and medieval periods. Reported finds include pottery and beads from the Aegean region, which help reconstruct contact networks and local chronologies.
This campaign is expected to yield new data on the island's early occupation and its Mediterranean connections. The findings should enhance the local settlement sequence and inform conservation and heritage management strategies for the area.
For official updates on site access, protection measures and publications, contact the Soprintendenza di Messina or the project's organising institutions.
