Excavation campaign on Stromboli: key information

The island of Stromboli in the Aeolian archipelago will be the focus of a new archaeological excavation targeting an important prehistoric settlement. The project is conducted by the American Numismatic Society under the scientific direction of David Yoon.

Findings and stratigraphy

Previous investigations have identified ancient habitations, including circular huts and stone-built walls, with later occupation phases dating to the classical and medieval periods. Reported finds include pottery and beads from the Aegean region, which help reconstruct contact networks and local chronologies.

• Permit duration: the Soprintendenza di Messina renewed the excavation concession for three years.
