Piazza Montebello: archaeological monitoring on site

For the redevelopment works at Piazza Montebello in San Benedetto del Tronto, the municipality has arranged archaeological supervision as required by the Soprintendenza. The monitoring task was directly assigned to archaeologist Martina Bombardelli, for a total fee of €4,160.

The archaeologist will oversee excavations that affect soil layers not previously investigated, aiming to safeguard any potential finds and ensure compliance with ministerial prescriptions throughout the operations.

Work progress and urban planning debate

The works, partially handed over in March 2026 to a consortium of companies, are entering a more active phase. The current plan foresees full pedestrianisation of the square, resulting in the loss of several parking spaces. This solution has prompted concerns from residents and shopkeepers, who launched a petition asking the next municipal administration to reopen the area to traffic.

Technicians say options that balance pedestrian areas with logistical needs are possible, but the final choice will be discussed publicly.

Neighborhood committee public meetings

The Marina Centro neighborhood committee has scheduled three evenings to debate the square’s future in the meeting room of the former Cinema delle Palme (first floor, entrance on via Fiscaletti). All events start at 21:00 and will be coordinated by the zonal association chaired by Carmelo D’Ancona.

  • Sunday 10 May 2026 – Maria Elisa D’Andrea (21:00)
  • Thursday 14 May 2026 – Giorgio Fede (21:00)
  • Friday 15 May 2026 – Nicola Mozzoni (21:00)

Archaeological monitoring will continue alongside the excavation work, aiming to reconcile heritage protection with the requirements of completing the urban redevelopment.
