Discover Spello, the flowered village
Perched on the slopes of Mount Subasio in the province of Perugia, Spello is one of Umbria’s most charming villages thanks to its pastel houses and meticulous floral displays. Its proximity to Rome makes it an ideal day-trip destination (around two hours by car).
Sights and landmarks
- Porta Consolare: the historic gateway featuring Roman and medieval elements.
- Porta Venere and the Towers of Properzio: one of the village’s most photographed views, with its characteristic arches.
- Collegiata di San Lorenzo: a church that reflects multiple architectural styles at the heart of the village.
- Church of Sant'Andrea: houses valuable frescoes and art inside.
- Villa dei Mosaici: remains of a Roman villa with well-preserved mosaic floors.
Why Spello is known for flowers
Flowers are central to the town’s identity and appear in two main events each year:
- Infiorate for Corpus Domini: around Corpus Domini (early June), the streets are covered with elaborate carpets and pictures made entirely of flower petals. The creations often take a full night to complete and can stretch for more than a kilometer through the historic center.
- "Windows, Balconies and Flowered Alleys" competition: throughout the season, residents decorate their balconies and alleys with cascades of flowers, culminating in an award ceremony in the summer that celebrates the community’s floral effort.
Practical tips for visitors
- Best time to visit: late spring to early summer to catch the Infiorate and peak floral displays.
- Arrival time: for the Infiorate, aim for early morning to avoid crowds and enjoy the views.
- Getting around: the historic center is pedestrian and uneven—wear comfortable shoes and watch for steps.
- Parking: use outer parking areas and continue on foot; spaces are limited in high season.
- Experience: beyond the floral events, wandering the lanes reveals local crafts and Umbrian culinary traditions.
