Venue: Palazzo Citterio, Milan
Palazzo Citterio presents Body Machine (Meridians), a video installation by Sino‑Canadian artist Sougwen Chung (b. 1985). Displayed on a large ground‑floor LED wall and free to the public, the work combines moving images, immersive sound and bodily motion data to create a responsive audiovisual environment.
Chung’s practice often involves training robotic arms to replicate and learn from her gestures (the Doug series — Drawing Operations Unit: Generation), establishing a collaborative dynamic between human and machine. In this project, motion data, environmental recordings, machine learning systems and sound design merge to generate biomimetic forms and to probe connections between body, technology and planetary systems.
A prominent strand of the installation focuses on water and ice: the artist conducted field research in the Arctic to document melting glaciers and polar light; bodily responses to sub‑zero immersion informed the digital language of the work, offering a sensory reflection on environmental change.
The installation is part of a program by the Pinacoteca di Brera in collaboration with the National Museum of Digital Art, investigating how contemporary technologies reshape relationships between humans, machines and environments. Check the Pinacoteca di Brera website for the latest visitor information.
