The joint inspection carried out on April 9, 2026 at Palazzo Donna Olimpia in Viterbo revealed significant deterioration of the monumental complex's interiors. Although the partial roof collapse did not affect the storage rooms, the assessment identified severe degradation that risks the safety and preservation of archaeological materials from the Acquarossa excavations.
Given the municipal administration's inability to allocate new storage spaces, the Superintendency has initiated procedures to move the finds to the Superintendency premises in Oriolo Romano. The relocation is now considered unavoidable to guarantee appropriate conservation and research conditions.
The Etruscan site of Acquarossa is a significant archaeological asset for the Viterbo area. A temporary transfer of the materials does not diminish the site's historical value but is a necessary step to safeguard the finds until optimal conservation and research conditions are available.
Further updates will be provided on the operational timetable and on any protective measures for the monumental complex.
