A restoration project is underway in Soncino to refurbish the historic stone plaques that mark streets and squares in the town centre. The work covers approximately fifty plaques and aims to restore legibility and the historic appearance of these urban elements.
The initiative, promoted by the local tourism department, received authorization from the Superintendency for Cremona, Lodi and Mantua. The contract was awarded to a conservation studio specialising in historic restoration. The total cost is estimated at around €5,000.
Main goals of the restoration:
This conservation work is part of a broader strategy to promote the village: recent months have seen a notable rise in visitor numbers to the fortress and historic centre, with peaks of over 500 daily accesses on sunny Sundays. Local authorities say targeted maintenance actions like this help make the cultural offer more accessible and attractive.
Practical note for residents and visitors: some plaques may be temporarily difficult to read while works are carried out; once completed, inscriptions will be clearly legible and preserved for the future.
