MAXXI Acquires Six Paintings by Giorgio Griffa for Its Permanent

MAXXI expands its permanent collection with six works by Giorgio Griffa

The National Museum of 21st Century Arts (MAXXI) in Rome has acquired six notable canvases by Giorgio Griffa, a leading figure in contemporary Italian painting. The new additions cover a broad timespan and document key phases of the artist's exploration of mark-making and canvas as material.

The selected works trace Griffa's transition from the pared-down gestures of the 1970s to more varied compositional experiments in the 1990s and early 2000s, highlighting his ongoing dialogue between sign, color and support.

Works acquired

  • Linee orizzontali (1973)
  • Segni orizzontali (1975)
  • Linee orizzontali (1976)
  • Arabesco Doppio (1986)
  • Trittico con sette linee (1999)
  • Quaranta tele (2001)

These large-scale works are important for understanding Griffa's practice: the deliberate use of unprepared supports, minimal yet expressive gestures, and a flexible visual vocabulary that evolves across decades.

Significance for the museum

The acquisition strengthens MAXXI's holdings in contemporary painting and places Griffa's work in dialogue with other national and international collections. For curators and visitors alike, the new works enable deeper readings of Griffa's approach to repetition, variation and spatial arrangement.

Visitor information

The paintings are now part of MAXXI's permanent collection. For current opening hours, related displays or guided tours that may feature these works, please check MAXXI's official channels or contact the museum directly for the latest visitor information.
