Sibari: Parco del Cavallo reopens on 25 April 2026

The central sector of the Sibari archaeological park, known as the Parco del Cavallo, reopened to the public on Saturday 25 April 2026 after a closure prompted by February flooding. The inaugural day included free admission and guided archaeological walks led by park staff.

Note that the reopening applies specifically to the accessible portion of the Parco del Cavallo. The National Archaeological Museum of Sibaritide and the Casabianca area remain on separate technical timelines for renovation and hydraulic works.

What reopens and what remains closed

Opening the Parco del Cavallo restores public access to key urban features of the ancient city—gates, baths, houses and roadway axes—but does not mean the entire archaeological complex is back to normal. Ongoing technical interventions and groundwater management are still required in parts of the site.

  • Inaugural date: 25 April 2026
  • Inaugural hours: free entry from 9:00 to 19:00
  • Guided walks: at 11:00 and 16:00
  • Area reopened: Parco del Cavallo (visitor area only)
  • Areas under works: National Archaeological Museum of Sibaritide and Casabianca

Technical context and the condition of finds

The flood that affected the Crati plain on 13 February 2026 required precautionary closures to ensure visitor safety and to assess infrastructure and paths. Current assessments indicate that storage deposits and movable finds were not directly reached by mud, so the main impact was on site access and facilities rather than on the archaeological materials themselves.

Continuous monitoring and maintenance of drainage systems and pumping installations remain essential in low-lying areas where groundwater control is critical.

Visitor tips

  • Check official opening times and updates before your visit.
  • Guided walks are organized by park staff; arrive early for scheduled sessions.
  • Certain parts of the archaeological complex may still have temporary access restrictions for technical reasons.

The reopening of the Parco del Cavallo is an operational step toward fully restoring public access to Sybaris-Thurii-Copiae, returning visitors to the sector where the ancient urban sequence is most clearly readable.
