The Palermo section of Italia Nostra takes part in the VI edition of Cultural Heritage Week with two activities focused on the city’s public buildings, highlighting architectural and historical features that are often overlooked.
Lecture: “Public constructions in Palermo between 1920 and 1940.” Architect Adriana Chirco, section president, will present major works of that period: from the monumental entrance on Via Roma to the Palace of Justice, the shipyard facilities and the churches of new neighbourhoods, outlining the complex process behind the construction of the Postal Palace.
Guided visit: a chance to admire the refined furnishings, high-quality materials and Futurist artworks inside the monumental building designed by Angiolo Mazzoni and built between 1928 and 1934 on central Via Roma. The visit is reserved for Italia Nostra members.
These events provide a practical insight into the architectural quality and design choices of the period, highlighting interior details such as varied marbles, copper fittings, inlaid wood furniture, large arched glazing and works by artists of the early and later Futurist movements present in some rooms.
