Illegal digs and online sales: first convictions in fossil trafficking ring in Marche

Autore: Redazione 11/03/2026 04:52

First convictions in illicit fossil trafficking across Marche and Umbria

Authorities have handed down initial sentences against members of a group accused of unauthorized excavations and online trading of paleontological and archaeological items. The operation, led by the Carabinieri's Cultural Heritage Protection Unit, resulted in the seizure of tens of thousands of specimens and subsequent legal actions.

Investigation, methods and seizures

Prosecutors describe a structured organization: some individuals carried out digs, others cleaned and stored finds, while others handled sales through online marketplaces. Investigations led to the seizure of approximately 30,000 items from sites in the provinces of Ancona, Macerata and Pesaro-Urbino, including locations such as Gagliole, the Gola della Rossa Park, Monte Catria and Monte Nerone. Two local museums were also seized.

The suspects reportedly used off-road vehicles, maps to locate rich sites, and warehouses converted into workshops to extract fossils from rock. Sales were channeled through online platforms with electronic payments, and coordination relied on informal communication tools like WhatsApp groups.

Judicial measures

Some defendants accepted plea procedures or abbreviated trials and received sentences ranging from about one and a half to three years. Three individuals were remanded for trial, with the court setting a date for proceedings. Charges include theft, laundering of cultural goods, unauthorized excavations and, in some cases, criminal association.

Practical advice for visitors and collectors

  • Protected items: fossils and archaeological finds are frequently protected by cultural heritage laws and, when discovered, may belong to the State or be subject to specific protections.
  • Responsible purchasing: anyone intending to acquire artifacts should request and retain provenance documentation and permits; avoid purchases when origin is unclear or undocumented.
  • Reporting: suspicious digging activities or sales listings that raise provenance concerns should be reported to the Carabinieri Cultural Heritage Protection Unit or the regional Superintendency for Cultural Heritage.
  • Behavior in sensitive areas: do not undertake excavations or searches in protected zones; for research projects, work with accredited institutions and secure the necessary authorizations.

The case highlights the need to protect cultural heritage and for continued vigilance by institutions, enthusiasts and collectors to curb the illegal market in archaeological and paleontological material.
