Sauris‑Zahre awarded GSTC certification: a model of sustainable tourism

Sauris‑Zahre, a small Friulian village of about 390 residents, has been officially certified by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). The recognition follows a rigorous evaluation process begun in 2024 and carried out by independent, accredited bodies.

The GSTC certification acknowledges the destination's balanced approach across governance, socio‑economic benefits for the local community, cultural heritage protection and environmental impact management. Sauris‑Zahre joins a limited number of certified destinations in Italy, including Tarvisio.

  • Key strengths: preservation of local linguistic and cultural traditions, innovative hospitality such as Italy's first Albergo Diffuso certified by GSTC, and a scenic alpine lake setting;
  • Local impact: strategies aimed at countering depopulation and ensuring economic benefits for residents;
  • Visitor experiences: nature trails, seasonal events and an acclaimed dark night sky ideal for stargazing.

Visitors planning a trip around local events can note the “Villaggio Selvaggio” festival (from 31 May to 2 June 2026), a three‑day programme of outdoor activities for families. Other highlights during the year include “Gumala Gumala” (June) and “Gebele” (October), which reflect the slow, restorative pace of the destination.

The GSTC certification strengthens Sauris‑Zahre’s position as a destination for mindful travellers and underscores sustainable practices that can inspire other Italian villages.
