San Casciano dei Bagni: new agreement to enhance the Bagno Grande archaeological site

The Tuscany Region has approved a new framework agreement between the Region, the Ministry of Culture, the Municipality of San Casciano dei Bagni and the University for Foreigners of Siena. This renewed pact builds on the 2022 arrangement and aims to strengthen research, protection and public enjoyment of the Bagno Grande archaeological area.

Main objectives include safeguarding the heritage, continuing excavation and research campaigns, and promoting sustainable cultural development in the area through scientific initiatives and public access.

• Governance: establishment of a participatory Foundation to ensure integrated, stable and professional project management.
• Research and digs: continuation of archaeological campaigns and detailed study of the Etruscan‑Roman sanctuary.
• Cultural infrastructure: planning and management of the archaeological area and a dedicated museum for the finds.
• International hub: creation of a research center to encourage scientific collaboration and international promotion of the local heritage.

The Region notes that the finds from the site require a long‑term, structured programme combining specialized research, cultural promotion and sustainable territorial development. The agreement currently does not create direct immediate expenses for the regional budget; any future contributions to the Foundation will be defined by subsequent acts and sustainability checks.
