San Casciano dei Bagni: a permanent Museum of Bronzes

A heritage enhancement project is underway to establish a permanent museum in San Casciano dei Bagni (SI) dedicated to bronzes and other Etruscan-Roman finds recovered from the Bagno Grande area. The initiative is a partnership between the Ministry of Culture, the Tuscany Region, the Municipality and the University for Foreigners of Siena, aiming for an opening by the end of 2026.

The collection and its significance

The exhibition core includes important finds notable for both their number and state of preservation. Key elements include:

  • 24 bronze statues in excellent condition;
  • approximately 5,000 coins in gold, silver and bronze;
  • over 300 votive objects and associated materials;
  • a 90 cm bronze serpent, among the largest discovered in the area;
  • inscriptions in Etruscan and Latin that testify to ancient Mediterranean cultural contacts.

Planned works and exhibition venue

The operational plan focuses on four main streams:

  • continuation of excavations involving students and researchers;
  • restoration and conservation of the finds;
  • museum installation at the Palazzo dell'Arcipretura, a 16th-century building in the town centre;
  • creation of an international hub for universities and research centres.

The overall funding foreseen is €4.5 million, covering acquisition of the building and exhibition works.

Management and outlook

Management will be entrusted to a participation foundation made up of the agreement partners, to ensure scientific continuity and long-term protection. Several pieces from the collection have already featured in international exhibitions, enhancing the find's visibility and laying the groundwork for a significant local museum display.

Location: 53040 San Casciano dei Bagni (SI), Italy. The venue will be the Palazzo dell'Arcipretura in the historic centre. The museum is expected to open by the end of 2026; for inauguration details, opening hours and guided visits, check the official municipal channels or the future Foundation's communications when available.
