Ryman and Schifano at miart: Intesa Sanpaolo brings the Agrati

Autore: Redazione 09/04/2026 04:11

The exhibition project

Intesa Sanpaolo is the main partner of miart 2026 with an installation dedicated to Robert Ryman and Mario Schifano, curated by Nicola Ricciardi. The display explores the monochrome and formal variations of the 1960s, drawing from the Luigi and Peppino Agrati Collection, now part of Intesa Sanpaolo's holdings.

Where to see the works

  • At the fair: selected works are shown in the bank's lounge area within the miart exhibition.
  • Gallerie d'Italia: Surface Veil IV by Ryman and other works are on view in Sala Manzoni.
  • The vault: a broader selection is kept in the historic vault of the Gallerie d'Italia and is available to visitors by reservation during the fair days.

Artists and curatorial focus

Both Ryman and Schifano use the monochrome as a starting point but follow different paths: Ryman investigates formal variation, materials and edges with methodological rigor; Schifano alternates reduction with the introduction of signs, photographic imagery and references to contemporary visual culture. The exhibition frames this dialogue also through the idea of modal jazz—structure and controlled improvisation versus openness and drift.

Visitor information

  • Visit type: the presentation is split across two venues (the fair and the museum) with an extension in the vault. Key works mentioned include Analogo (1961) by Schifano and Winsor 20 (1966) by Ryman.
  • Reservations: access to the vault is by reservation only; check availability and booking procedures with Gallerie d'Italia or miart organizers.
  • Context: the show highlights how private collecting, conservation and public display can be integrated within a museum framework managed by cultural programmes.

Why visit

The project offers a rare opportunity to see important works from the Agrati Collection presented in dialogue with the historic spaces of the Gallerie d'Italia and the transformed vault area. It also sheds light on institutional strategies for collection care, restoration and public engagement.
