This spring two important Italian museum shows offer a comparison between distinct approaches to the image in late 20th-century art. At Palazzo Strozzi in Florence the focus is on painting as a perceptual, contemplative space; at Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara the exhibition traces the visual and identity-shaping power of Pop Art.
Where: Palazzo Strozzi, Florence. What to expect: large canvases dominated by broad colour fields designed to create an emotional and sensory bond with the viewer. The exhibition covers Rothko’s development from early figurative experiments to his signature abstract compositions.
Where: Palazzo dei Diamanti, Ferrara. What to expect: a presentation of Warhol’s iconography through paintings, screenprints, drawings and Polaroids, highlighting key cycles such as Ladies and Gentlemen and his portraits of cultural icons.
Seen together, the two exhibitions reveal complementary ways in which artists redefined the image in the twentieth century: Rothko’s inward, sensory colour fields versus Warhol’s outward, media-shaped portraits. Both shows prompt reflection on perception, identity and the role of visual culture.
