From March 14 to August 23, Palazzo Strozzi presents a major exhibition dedicated to Mark Rothko. The show gathers seventy works from international museums and private collections to outline the artist's development and his connection with Florence and Italian artistic heritage.
Curated by Christopher Rothko and Elena Geuna, the exhibition is organized both chronologically and thematically, with two special sections at the Museo di San Marco and the Laurenziana Library, creating a direct dialogue between Rothko's paintings and Florence's artistic masterpieces.
The exhibition retraces Rothko's major phases: from early symbolic and dreamlike explorations in the 1930s–40s to the decisive shift toward large, meditative color fields that define his immersive painting. Central topics include the relationship between color and architecture, the metaphysical dimension of the canvas, and the influence of Florentine Renaissance art on Rothko's sensibility and palette.
Highlights include large-scale abstract canvases from the late 1940s and 1950s with layered color fields, more intimate works from the 1960s, and the final series in darker, earthy hues that synthesize introspection and discipline.
Practical tips for visiting:
The exhibition is presented by the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi with cultural partners and local institutions. It offers a rare chance to experience how Rothko transformed color into a deeply emotional and spiritual language.
