From 14 March to 23 August 2026, Palazzo Strozzi hosts one of the most extensive retrospectives dedicated to Mark Rothko (1903–1970). Curated by Christopher Rothko and Elena Geuna, the exhibition is conceived specifically for the palace, creating a conversation between the artist’s work and Florence’s artistic and architectural heritage.
The display follows a chronological route that traces Rothko’s career: early figurative works of the 1930s–40s influenced by Expressionism and Surrealism, leading to the abstract breakthroughs of the 1950s–60s characterized by large fields of color that invite a contemplative response.
The exhibition highlights how Rothko translated classical balance and expressive freedom into color-based spaces that transcend the canvas and foster emotional and spiritual engagement. Key loans from leading museums allow visitors to follow his stylistic evolution through late series such as Black and Gray (1969–1970) and his final works on paper.
Visitor tips: book tickets in advance via the Palazzo Strozzi official website. The layout includes intimate rooms designed to maximize personal encounters with the paintings and to enhance their contemplative impact within the historic settings.
