New excavation campaign at Monte Pruno

The Municipality of Roscigno launches a new excavation and artefact cataloguing campaign at the Roscigno–Monte Pruno Archaeological Park, scheduled from 8 June to 12 July 2026. The project is carried out under a permit granted by the Ministry of Culture to the Department of Humanities at the University of Naples Federico II.

The initiative aims to advance research, protection and enhancement of the local heritage and will involve university students, researchers and technical staff in fieldwork and laboratory activities.

  • Dates: 8 June – 12 July 2026
  • Scientific direction: Prof. Bianca Ferrara
  • Institutions involved: University of Naples Federico II, Ministry of Culture, CNR Lecce, Municipality of Roscigno
  • Planned activities: stratigraphic excavation, artefact cataloguing, laboratory analyses, geophysical surveys
  • Local support: BCC Monte Pruno (sponsorship for cultural and scientific initiatives)

The collaboration with CNR Lecce is particularly significant: the institute will carry out geophysical surveys as part of the international project “Roscigno-Monte Pruno (SA): geophysical analysis and remote sensing for future research”. These investigations will help map subsurface features and guide future research and conservation planning.

The Municipality will provide full logistical support for the operations and has expressed gratitude to institutional and scientific partners for their cooperation in promoting the site.

For details about participation, educational visits or updates on the campaign's findings, contact the cultural office of the Municipality of Roscigno or the Department of Humanities at the University of Naples Federico II.
