Sanvitale Fortress – from stronghold to residence

History and description

Founded in 1124 in connection with a defensive tower commissioned by the Pallavicino family, the fortress was purchased in the late 14th century by the Sanvitale family, from whom it later took its name. They began its transformation into a noble residence, a role it maintained for about six centuries until it was sold to the Municipality of Fontanellato and turned into a public monument. The fortress consists of a square courtyard with four towers, a moat, and an inner courtyard. It is distinguished not only by its external architectural decorations from the 17th and 18th centuries—such as windows and small balconies—but also by its many interior rooms. Among the most notable are the Saletta di Diana e Atteone, frescoed by Parmigianino, and the Camera Ottica, dating back to the late 19th century.

Curiosities

The fortress is surrounded by numerous legends, including tales of ghosts. Among them are the spirits of two little girls whose voices, according to some, can still be heard in several rooms of the building.

Access

Entry is only possible by booking guided tours. Admission costs between €8 and €10, with reductions and free entry available under specific conditions.

How to reach it

Located in the center of the village of Fontanellato, the fortress can be reached by car from the A1 motorway (Fidenza‑Salsomaggiore exit), by bus using suburban lines, or on foot and by bicycle via local paths.

A perfect example of the transformation from medieval fortress to Renaissance residence, the Sanvitale Fortress is an unmissable stop on any itinerary through Emilia‑Romagna.
