History and description
Built between 1380 and 1480 by order of the Malatesta family, who governed Cesena on behalf of the Papal State, the fortress became a symbol of their military and political power. During the Renaissance, it underwent modifications that gave it its current structure, first as a military stronghold and later as a museum. With a trapezoidal layout, the fortress features two towers and an inner courtyard, and today it houses the Museum of Agricultural History.
Curiosities
Linked to the legend of the two towers, which are said to symbolically represent male and female energy, the fortress has also served as the set for numerous film productions.
Access
Open from Tuesday to Sunday, the fortress is accessible by reservation at the price of €5, with reductions and specific free entry days available.
How to reach it
Located in Via Cia degli Ordelaffi, the fortress can be reached from Bologna or Rimini by car via the A14 motorway, by train to Cesena, and finally on foot or by bike with a scenic walk.
