History and description
Originally built as a watchtower in the 11th century, the fortress was later expanded by the Medici, becoming a true stronghold designed to control the surrounding valleys. It was abandoned in 1703 and only much later restored, making the medieval village where it stands today one of the most fascinating in Italy. Constructed in stone, the fortress features a central square tower and four cylindrical corner towers, along with the Church of Santa Maria della Pietà, all overlooking a breathtaking panorama.
Curiosities
The fortress is famous for being the filming location of several international movies, including The Name of the Rose (1986) and The American (2010), starring George Clooney.
Access
As an open‑air site, the fortress is always freely accessible.
How to reach it
Located in the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, the fortress can be reached by car in about 45 minutes from L’Aquila, or on foot from the village of Calascio, following a trekking path of about 20–30 minutes.
Standing at an altitude of 1,460 meters, Rocca Calascio is one of the most beautiful fortresses in Italy, immersed in a timeless atmosphere and offering breathtaking views.
