Patroni Museum reopens in Pula

The Giovanni Patroni Museum has reopened following an extensive refurbishment. The exhibition area has been enlarged and now includes nine themed galleries presenting the history and archaeological contexts of Nora and the surrounding territory.

Date and access: the reopening took place in March 2026; until April 4 schools and local residents can visit the new displays free of charge.

Highlights

The museum's layout is organized by thematic sections that reconstruct public buildings, cult places and necropolises. Key exhibits include:

  • a baboon-shaped balsamarium recovered from the Phoenician necropolis;
  • votive figurines and jewelry from tombs and settlement areas;
  • explanatory panels that contextualize finds within the city's life and rituals.

Exhibition design and management

The museographic redesign was led by architect Jari Franceschetto together with scientific curators from the Superintendence. The museum is managed by Fondazione Pula Cultura Diffusa, with Isabella Atzeni as director.

Conservation lab: a new feature is a visible restoration laboratory where visitors can observe conservation work, providing insight into archaeological recovery processes.

Cultural importance and outlook

Local authorities describe the expanded museum as a regional cultural asset that complements the archaeological park of Nora. Plans foresee further expansion by acquiring adjacent properties to broaden exhibition capacity and interpretation.

The Nora Archaeological Park has seen a marked rise in attendance in recent years, growing from about 65,000 to over 100,000 annual visitors. The fully operational museum aims to enhance the overall visitor experience and support research and education.
