Between March 29 and July 19, 2026, Museo Eremitani in Padua presents an innovative project that complements a traditional Escher exhibition with a location-based virtual reality (LBVR) installation. The aim is to convert the observation of Escher’s prints into a bodily, walkable experience where orientation and gravity are deliberately unsettled.
The installation is not a mere 360° video but an LBVR system that maps visitors’ physical movements onto a virtual environment in real time. After putting on the headset, each step in the exhibition space corresponds to movement in the virtual world. Visitors create a personal avatar at the start, allowing recognition and interaction among participants — the experience becomes shared rather than solitary.
Environmental elements are interactive: surfaces and objects activate, morph or open when approached, producing continuous perceptual shifts. Trained guides assist visitors navigating architectures that intentionally blur conventional notions of up, down, inside and outside.
The route is designed as a progressive dive into Escher’s visual universe, featuring environments inspired by signature works:
This VR installation does not replace the study of Escher’s prints, which remain central to the exhibition. Instead, virtual reality adds a participatory dimension: visitors stop being observers and start inhabiting the paradoxes. The format helps to grasp the interplay of logic and contradiction that defines Escher’s work and offers a fresh, sensory understanding.
Practical tips: book ahead, wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for physical movement. To fully appreciate Escher’s approach, pair the immersive route with the traditional print display.
