Procedamus: GATC keeps Castrum Novum active

Volunteers from the Gruppo Archeologico del Territorio Cerite (GATC) have carried out cleaning and maintenance operations that made the Castrum Novum archaeological site accessible again after the winter months. Despite the halt to work on the Visitor Centre, the area is now tidy, safer and ready for visitors and school groups.

The volunteer efforts focused on essential tasks for site conservation and enjoyment: removing protective winter covers, cutting back vegetation, and cleaning excavation areas and access routes. These activities enable both ongoing research and public visits.

  • Educational activities: students from the "Vignacce" school in Santa Marinella recently explored the excavations together with Spanish peers as part of a cultural exchange;
  • Institutional cooperation: GATC works alongside the Civic Museum Hub to improve access and promotion of the site;
  • Visitor safety: targeted interventions have enhanced pathways and visitor safety.

At the same time, guided tours at Santa Severa Castle have restarted, organized by the Civic Museum Hub in collaboration with GATC. The itinerary includes the Museum of the Sea and Ancient Navigation, the Castle Museum, the Early Christian Church, the village and the fortress.

  • Every Sunday: guided tour at 10:30;
  • Special appointments: Saturday 20 June 2026 and Saturday 27 June 2026 at 16:00;
  • Price: €8.00 (includes guided tour and museum entry).

For information and bookings contact the Civic Museum Hub ticket office at +39 392 302 5990. The renewed commitment of cultural volunteers shows how local actions can have a tangible impact on the protection and promotion of archaeological heritage.
