History and description
Built around 25 BC as the main entrance to the city of Augusta Praetoria, the gate was part of a system of four entrances in the Roman city walls. Constructed with blocks of puddingstone and later covered with two types of marble, it incorporates two series of arches, once adorned with statues and decorative elements meant to showcase imperial power. During the Middle Ages, a chapel was built on its top, later demolished. The original Roman pavement has been restored and can now be admired through walkways.
Curiosities
The gate is characterized by a kind of “double face”: the outer façade, more richly decorated, was intended to display the empire’s power to enemies and travelers, while the inner façade, more sober, emphasized Roman efficiency—thus reinforcing its propagandistic purpose.
Access
Although it required a toll during the medieval period, today the gate is always freely accessible. Guided tours are often available, sometimes including the city walls.
How to reach it
Located at the eastern edge of Aosta’s historic center, the gate can be reached by train (from Milan or Turin toward Aosta), by car via the A5 motorway, and finally on foot from the city center.
Recognized as one of the best-preserved Roman gates in Europe, Porta Praetoria is an unmissable stop—a “living” monument integrated into the urban fabric, allowing visitors to step directly into the history of Aosta’s origins.
