History and description
Porta Napoli is a triumphal arch city gate in Lecce, marking one of the main entrances to the historic center together with Porta San Biagio and Porta Rudiae. It was built in 1548, on the initiative of the citizens and Ferrante Loffredo, governor of the province of Terra d’Otranto, in honor of Emperor Charles V of Habsburg, who had promoted an important defensive system for the city against Turkish incursions.
Architecturally, Porta Napoli features a single round arch flanked on each side by columns with Corinthian capitals. At the top rises a triangular pediment, in whose tympanum dominates the imperial coat of arms of Charles V: a double‑headed eagle, accompanied by military ornaments such as trophies, armor, and cannons, recalling the Roman symbolism of triumphal arches. Finally, beneath the pediment, on the architrave, a Latin inscription praises the emperor’s deeds.
In the 19th century, the stretches of walls flanking Porta Napoli were demolished, altering the original appearance of the gate in relation to the city walls.
Curiosities
The name “Porta Napoli” derives from its function, as this was the gate leading to the consular road towards Naples. Interestingly, although it was built in honor of Charles V, the emperor never made a triumphal entry through the arch.
Access
As an open‑air monument, Porta Napoli is freely accessible at any time.
How to reach it
Located in Lecce’s historic center, the gate can be reached by public transport, with several bus lines stopping nearby, or on foot from various parts of the city center.
Thus, Porta Napoli is not only a defensive and monumental structure but also a symbol of Habsburg Lecce.
