History and description
Built in the 3rd century BC on the initiative of a member of the gens Avillia, the bridge-aqueduct served the Roman colony for irrigation and for working bardiglio marble. About 60 meters long, it is a single-arch bridge with a double functional level, now fully visible thanks to the illuminated glass flooring added during restoration. Today, it is also a popular hiking site, surrounded by rich flora and fauna waiting to be discovered.
Curiosities
Considered one of the most significant examples of Roman engineering in the Alps, the bridge bears an original Latin inscription on its arch, attesting to its builder, date of construction, and private nature.
Access
Open daily from April to September, the site can be visited at the cost of €5, with specific reductions available. Guided tours of about 45–50 minutes are offered, including historical and archaeological explanations.
How to reach it
The bridge can be reached by car via the Aosta Ovest/Saint-Pierre motorway exit, by private bus lines, or on foot from nearby parking areas.
A true testament to Roman engineering, the Pondel Bridge-Aqueduct is one of the main heritage sites of the Aosta Valley, beautifully set between history and nature.
