History and description
An iconic symbol of Venice, the Rialto Bridge was the first permanent structure to allow crossing of the Grand Canal. Initially built in wood and reconstructed several times, it was later rebuilt in Istrian stone by Antonio da Ponte. Characterized by three ramps—one central and two lateral—the bridge features an arch decorated with religious bas-reliefs and two ironic capitals mocking those who doubted its construction. Closely tied to the Rialto Market, it still hosts 24 shops along its sides, recalling the medieval tradition.
Curiosities
Like many monuments in Veneto, the Rialto Bridge is linked to numerous legends. One of the most famous tells of the devil, who demanded the soul of the first person to cross it. Despite an attempted trick, he ultimately claimed the soul of the architect’s pregnant wife. The bridge has also been a film set for several famous movies, including The Tourist starring Johnny Depp.
Access and how to reach it
As a pedestrian crossing, the bridge is freely accessible. It can be reached on foot, being very close to Piazza San Marco, by bus via several urban lines, or by vaporetto, getting off at the Rialto stop on lines 1 and 2.
Indissolubly linked to Venetian city life, the Rialto Bridge is an unmissable stop to fully enjoy the historic center and all its unique features.
